Building a studio structure in a backyard.. .

Hello All,
Can anyone point me to some state/local documentation about building a structure in a backyard/driveway space on your own land?
I'm specifically looking to build a 20'w x 30'L x 14'H structure behind a potential house I purchase, as an artist studio for personal work, not commercial work and it will not be a dwelling.
What are laws/restrictions concerning these types of things? I'm specifically looking in Quincy/Milton.
TIA!

Call town hall and ask for the building inspector department. The restrictions depend on the towns setbacks, conservations buffer zone restrictions and if there is digging then National Grid would need to come by and mark the utility lines to make sure you don't hit the gas or water line. Each town has specific rules and they can change anytime, so sometimes your neighbor may have a structure to close to the property line, but they may have been grandfathered in because of the date the law was set.
