Keeping the forums useful & civil

Until now we've taken a hands off approach to the moderation of these forums. Unfortunately, the LA forums have gotten out of hand in a few places.

Let's all re-read the rules. Especially 1, 2 and 7:

1. Be respectful: we welcome debate, but not disrespectful language or personal attacks.

2. Stay on topic: our forums can include anything real estate-related, but don’t ask about San Diego in the Boston forum.

7. Have fun! This is your chance to yak it up with other real estate freaks looking to get a good deal on a house.

I'm going to play a much more active role and will delete any messages that don't meet our rules. If you feel like there is a post that violates the rules you can reach me at matt.goyer@redfin.com. Or click "Report Abuse to a Moderator".

Is this only true for LA, or for others too?  (I suppose I could just go and look).  I wondered if there was something special about us.

I think that's the root of the problem: some posters think there's something special about LA... real estate is local, after all!  :smileywink:

LA and the Bay Area seem to be the problem children. Everyone else is pretty good.

That's interesting... I usually read 80% of the posts on the LA forum, and while there are some people who are contrary, pompous or sarcastic, I had not noticed anything downright offensive that required moderation.

Well it does stand to reason that, by the law of averages, there are going to be more contentious posts out of the eighteen thousand in the Los Angeles forum, than say the 69 posts in the New York forum.

The anger level on this board sometimes can be unhealthy. It reminds me sometimes of Michael Douglas in "Falling Down".

Require real names for posting.  That would go a long way toward making things more civil.

I think the Los Angeles Forum is much more entertaining than other area forums due to the sarcastic, condescending, and taunting tones of the conversations here.   It is difficult to imagine anyone taking the comments on this board to seriously, but I guess BIG BROTHER knows best.  We better all get used to it.

Don't get me wrong, I've chuckled at a few the exchanges here too. Unfortunately we've received a number of emails from folks who are afraid to post for fear of being made fun, which is not the atmosphere we want. We want a place that folks can feel free to ask any real estate question and get an answer.
