US News' Best High School List

http://education.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-high-schools/rankings/gold-medal-list

Bay Area schools:

#28 Lowell (San Francisco)

#36 Misson (Fremont)

#67 Gunn (Palo Alto)

#70 Monta Vista (Cupertino)

#73 Piedmont (Piedmont)

#83 Paly (Palo Alto)

#86 Campolindo (Moraga)

#89 Miramonte (Orinda)

#93 Saratoga (Saratoga)

#98 Lynbrook (Cupertino)

So Bay Area has 10 schools in the top 100 for the entire nation. Not bad.

That's crazy if you think about it.  The bay area has ~2% of the US population but 10% of the top 100 schools.

Re: US News' Best High School List

What probably irks people the most is the price tag that comes with admittance to these schools.  Properties that get your kids into these schools are sky high. Someone thinking about moving to these areas for the schools should ask themselves "What is the difference between buying a house in a descent area and sending the kids to private school? Or, is it more beneficial to buy in a premium area paying the hefty price tag"?

As always, you have to look at it from many angles, short and long term. Some will argue that it is indeed worth it to pay the price for the schools because it will translate into higher resale. Others will say you might give up to much for a particular area like choosing between a house and a condo. It's possible a house in Sunnyvale with pretty good schools might fit you more than a small condo in Palo Alto.

Believe it or not, there have been a few condos that have sold for around $400K in South Palo Alto. I believe there is one for sale on West Bayshore Ave (Palo Alto address) for $389K. It's smaller, a two and one, but still Palo Alto schools. If you need a house, say for a larger family, buying a house in a good area and sending your kids to private school may satisfy more of what your after without spending as much. I'm not saying which one is better, just comparing different situations. The resale will still be there as long as it's a good area. I know it's never going to be perfect, but it's just good to go through everything that's on your checklist. I'm just staring off with RedFin, Hope this helps.:smileyhappy:

Heh.. why live in Palo Alto when you can have your kids go to an even better H.S. in Fremont?

no. that's impossible. a palo alto condo could never be priced so low.

it's common knowledge private school  from k though 12 cost about $400k-$500k.

it's also common knowledge people buying in palo alto are willing to pay this $400k-$500k premium to have great PA public schools.

that means the cheapest a condo would be priced is $400k-$500k plus the value of the land and housing structure so the minimum price for a condo should be around $800k-$900k. $389k is insanity, they are practically giving it away.

it all makes complete sense if you just did the "school-premium" math.

please inform the seller to correct their price accordingly.

Re: US News' Best High School List

There are currently two properties on West Bayshore Rd. The addresses are

2466 West Bayshore Rd #1 Palo Alto, Ca 94303

2468 West Bayshore Rd #5 Palo Alto, Ca 94303

I looked at the RedFin listing, it's somewhat mixed for those. The elementary and junior high appear to be Palo Alto, not the high school. So the listing detail is partially right. There is one that has all Palo Alto schools as well as Gunn high. That address is

4250 El Camino Real Unit A3 Palo Alto, Ca 94306 MLS# 81127685 Small but below $400K. I believe there have been a few units a little larger than the one for sale right now that have sold right around $400K, maybe a bit over. All with Palo Alto schools.
