So I'm looking at a house that was built in 1969 and claims to have been "rebuilt" in 1999. So much so that the listing agents are citing 1999 as the year built. Where can I find out how extensive it was rebuilt? I don't want to buy a place with a 1999 roof and 1969 plumbing.

Hi rcuro, In King County, if a home has had all new systems (electrical, plumbing, heating) put in with a down to the studs remodel you can change the year built but it must be done to code, permitted and inspected all along the way in order to legally change the year built. It is quite a lengthly and costly process. When all of this is done the "new" year is called the Effective Year Built. Not sure about CA's laws but I think this is important enough to dig deeper. Ask your agent to find out!
