I am sure there are many people who applied for the 8000 tax credit if they bought a house and had time to file their taxes with the credit request. I had to file an amendment 1040X because I already filed my return well before I knew I was getting a house. Has anyone applied for their credit, and has anyone got back anything from the feds yet?
Kudos!

I thought the tax credit was for your 2009 returns?

I believe you can re-file and get it right away. (where right away allows time for the IRS to process it of course!)

Nope, you can file a tax return for 2008 and be eligible for credit for a purchase on or after Jan 09 and show that purchase as a Dec 31 2008 purchase (its all legal) to get the money back in your 2008 refund. I think you can still do that after the tax deadline of Apr 15th, by filing a 1040X Amendment. One thing though is you can only file an amendment AFTER you have received your initial refund, or paid your tax bill. So if you already have your refund, you can still file an amended return and get 8000 back this year.

Did you do it yourself yet, SoCal? If we manage to get a house this year, we could do it but most likely would just wait and file it with next year's taxes.

I went to H&R Block, however after they did all the paperwork I realized how easy it was that I could have done it myself. I think the main reason was I needed to make sure that I was eligible for getting the refund this year itself. It was likely that my fiance and I would have a MAGI of above 150K next year because of all the stocks we sold to make money for the downpayment. That would make use either inelgible or partially eligible for the refund.

I purchased in February, filed my taxes April 10th, and received my credit Friday :smileyhappy:. Easy as pie!

A MAGI? oh adjusted gross income? So you're not eligible if you earn over 150k?

yup limit is $75k for single homebuyers, and $150K for married couples. here's all the info: http://www.federalhousingtaxcredit.com/2009/index.html

there's also a california home purchase tax credit with no income limit, but it's ONLY for new homes: http://www.ftb.ca.gov/individuals/New_Home_Credit.shtml

Great, more government 'help' that I am not eligible for!  Remind me again why we need to encourage low-income people to take on huge financial loads?

Oh, and making over $75K makes you 'rich' in LA now?

Kudos!
