I purchased my home over 20 years ago when people didn't think of their homes necessarily as an investment.  20% down was the norm if not more and people lived in their homes for a long period of time.  My home has appreciated a great deal, more than I ever thought possible. I couldn't even afford my place today based on what I earned at the peak of my career even when factoring inflation.  I am happy that my home is worth what it is, not that I plan to sell it, but I really don't understand why the majority of people think this real estate craze of the past 5 years is a good thing?  Yes, my property taxes are very low thanks to Prop 8, but if I sold my place and moved, I would have to pay a ridiculous amount of property tax to the government and a huge % to the real estate agent. My neighbor has to put her kids into day care to "afford" a house with her husband. My wife stayed home to raise our kids who didn't turn out to be drug addicts and both can actually cook and don't eat out 7 days a week.  It seems to me that society as a whole DOES NOT gain from an increase in property prices.  I would happily surrender my home appreciation if we would return to a place where the government, real estate agents, banks and daycare didn't pretend to do a service to families when they do the exact opposite. A selfish few gain while society pays a penalty.  People need to stop buying these riduculous priced basic homes and spend more time with their families. Affordability will return when people stop sacrificing their family for home ownership.

I agree with you. But there are a lot more people today wanting to live in the same place and that means sacrificing the rearing of their kids to somebody else.Sounds like if you have to do that why have kids? You can't have it all and do it all well.

not sure how you can turn back the clock when 2 incomes family  becomes the norm.  imagine when 2 incomes is insufficient and some take desperate measures such as 4 income families under 1 roof.

I agree with your sentiments. This is why I see a lot of young families moving to areas like Valencia, where they can afford houses on one salary. The climate sucks, but hey, at least mommy's home. I would actually recommend most young couples to only buy a house that they can afford on only the husband's salary. I see too many young women who have babies and then are forced back to work a month after childbirth in order to afford their lifestyle.

(By the way, I think that you mean Prop 13 instead of Prop 8. I don't think that the issue of gay marriage has had a huge effect on property taxes. Haha.)

Toomanypeople,  There aren't a lot more people wanting to live in the same place, just a lot more people willing to sacrifice their kids in order to live there.  No you can't have it all and do it well, but when everybody begins to think they can, mom's go back to work and people start paying higher and higher amounts for homes.

So how is life in that ivory tower that you live in?

These are different times, the ways of life from 30 years ago do not exist now.  We are way better off in some ways, and way worse off, but none of that is going to change.  I am glad that you didn't have to work, and you should consider yourself lucky that you got to buy a house when they were very cheap.

I have a higher paying job, and it is going to take a nice percentage of my salary as well as all of the money that I have saved up in my life to pay for a house that is in a nice enough area for me to consider living in, and I have been financially responsible my entire life (zero debt ever).  Of course my wife is going to have to work to help pay for our place, that is just how life is nowadays.

You know what else is great.  Most women are independent these days and actually prefer to have a job, and contribute financially.

I am a one income family, taking care of my two children. Obviously, I can't stay home with my kids or we'd be a zero income family.

I guess I could get married just to have a stay-at-home father...

Not everyone has the luxury of being able to stay home with the kids. We do as well as we can with the circumstances that we have been given.
