We are looking at a house that needs an additional bathroom added. There is space to add on a bathroom, however we would have to build the structure but I am clueless about how much something like that would cost. Without that knowledge, I don't feel like I can clearly look at the costs of a house. Anyone have any idea on this or where to find out without meeting with a builder?

The current bare minumum going rate for a contractor ie finished walls and basic floors nothing fancy ie no plumbing or major electrical or major roof line modification is running about $250 a sqft. A bathroom is rough to forecast given many factors plumbing etc could run 40-80K pending just how crazy you want to get. Of course there is always the homedepot parking lot labor and no permits approach but the money you save generally is subtracted from your pocket later. Talk to an archetect This guy might be available for a consult fee - he has many little projects going on around the Bay and a good sense of running costs. Wife and I have been getting his advice on homes we were serious about. ben@andersonarch.net

Most importantly, Is the house built on a slab? If so, it's going to be very difficult and costly to add a bathroom. Where would the pipes go? If it's on a slab, my opinion is not to even consider adding a bathroom. If the house has a crawl space, then you can proceed with cost estimates.
